Bursaries awarded to engineering students at Cato Ridge Works

On 27 January 2012, ARM together with its JV partner Assore, through Assmang, awarded bursaries worth R315 000 to three first-year students toward studying BSc Engineering Degrees at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The bursaries were awarded during an official handover ceremony at the company’s Cato Ridge Works in a bid to increase the number of black engineers.

Each student will receive a bursary worth R65 000 during the university’s academic year to cover expenses such as accommodation and tuition and includes a living allowance.

The students, all of whom hail from poverty stricken grandparent-headed backgrounds, were able to perform excellently in their matric exams and despite their difficult financial and emotional circumstances.

The criteria applied to select the bursary recipients were aimed at attracting the best performing students from schools in the greater Cato Ridge area, where the company is based. Upon graduating the recipients will also be offered the opportunity to ply their skills in the company.
