ARM FERROUS
ARM’s ferrous metals interests are held through wholly owned ARM Ferrous which owns 50% of Assmang (Pty) Ltd, a long-established miner and processor of metals for the world’s steel industries. The other 50% of Assmang is held by Assore Ltd. Assmang’s operating divisions are based on its two principal commodities: iron ore and manganese ore
The iron ore division is made up of the Beeshoek and Khumani mines, both located in the Northern Cape, approximately 200km west of Kimberley. The Beeshoek open-pit operations are situated 7km west of Postmasburg and the Khumani open pits are adjacent to, and south-east of, the Sishen mine, which is operated by Kumba Iron Ore. Khumani Mine supplies iron ore to the export markets and exports are railed to the iron ore terminal at Saldanha Bay. Beeshoek ore is mainly supplied to local customers, with some exported via Khumani.
The manganese operations, Gloria and Nchwaning, collectively Black Rock Mine, are situated in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, approximately 80km northwest of the town of Kuruman. Manganese ore is supplied locally to the Assmang-owned smelters, Machadodorp Ferromanganese and Ferrochrome Works, and Cato Ridge Ferromanganese Works, but is mainly exported through Port Elizabeth as well as Durban and Richards Bay. This division holds a 50% interest in Cato Ridge Alloys, Mizushima Ferroalloys Company and Sumitomo Corporation.
