Nkomati Mine achieves 1 000 000 Fatality Free Shifts

Nkomati Mine, a 50:50 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Norilsk Nickel reached a remarkable safety milestone in achieving 1 Million Fatality Free Shifts on 16 April 2010. Nkomati also reported a record 1 717 Fatality Free Production Shifts (1 000 Fatality Free Production Shifts is regarded as a significant achievement).

Koos Grove, Business Unit Manager at Nkomati: “I extend by appreciation and congratulations to every Nkomati employee and to every Contractor employee for their contribution in reaching this achievement. I would also like to extend a special word of congratulations to the Project Management team for their contribution, especially considering the high risk activities associated with the Phase 2 A and Phase 2 B construction activities.”

Two important facts relating to Nkomati’s achievement are:

  • The Nkomati team worked for a total of 18 months and 23 days without sustaining a Fatal Injury, and
  • During this time, the team also ensured that up to 2 000 contractors conducted construction activities in a safe manner.
