Opening of the new community road at Modikwa Platinum Mine, Maandagshoek Limpopo

Sekhukhune Limpopo, Sunday 14 August 2011. African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) and Anglo American Platinum Limited, (Joint Venture Partners in the Modikwa Platinum Mine), in partnership with Greater Tubatse Local Municipality are today proud to host the opening of the new community road. Construction of the road was completed at a cost of approximately R65 million and was funded by African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) through its subsidiary, ARM Mining Consortium, and Anglo American Platinum.
The ceremony will be attended by dignitaries including the Deputy President of South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe, the Premier of Limpopo, Cassel Mathale, the Executive Chairman of African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) and Chairman of Modikwa Platinum Mine, Mr Patrice Motsepe, King Thulare III of the Bapedi Nation, Paramount Chief K K Sekhukhune, the President of the ANC Youth League, Mr Julius Malema, the Executive Head: Joint Ventures of Anglo American Platinum Limited, Mr Vishnu Pillay, the Mayor of Greater Tubatse Local Municipality, Councillor Nkosi Mahlake and other traditional, national and local leaders.
The community road links up some of the remote communities in the Sekhukhune area to the main provincial road; the R37 which is between Polokwane and Burgersfort. Construction of the community road took 14 months and approximately 400 construction jobs were created. Approximately 90% of the employees used for the construction of the road were from the seven local communities neighbouring the Modikwa Platinum Mine.
Patrice Motsepe, the Executive Chairman of African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) said, �The seven local communities in the area neighbouring Modikwa Platinum Mine own 17% of ARM Mining Consortium which translates to 8.5% of Modikwa Platinum Mine. The local communities identified the building of the road as an important initiative to improve the living conditions and mobility of the people in the area. We have a duty to uplift the living conditions and standards of living of the people and communities neighbouring our mines throughout South Africa and worldwide. The long term success of our mining operations depends on building mutually beneficial partnerships with the communities, the local authorities and all other stakeholders.�
